The way I understood the quote is that, you don't put energy to fight the old but you mainly focus on the building the new. Which means, you don't necessarily ignore the old, you just don't put too much of your energy on fighting it, because what's done is done. You gotta focus your energy on creating habits and thoughts on building the new. I don't know about you but I like this quote because to me it makes sense and it worked on some aspects of my life. It really just depend on how you understood it. I would not go as far as say it's wrong. But like any other things in life, you take it with a grain of salt.

Good one! Since Socrates never wrote anything we only have Platos Republic to tell us something about it. But as one of our saints (saint Dnyaneswara) said in his quote, “you should add something where I am short to do it, while reduce if I oversell it, but apply your mind that’s my only request”

The mind is a very complicated thing.I find this quote very helpful. I have spent many years fighting with the past.i never realised how it became a habit. I suffered a lot because of that. Maybe for some people it doesn't find any meaning but it is very helpful for many others. If someone don't find it helpful then it's ok. Maybe that is not their need. But today the mental health is major issue. And this quote is so helpful. It uses the correct use of words which can change the pattern of thinking of a person and help come out of negativity. this is clearly related to personal change . it can be and should be shared wherever necessary because many people can find it helpful. Regardless of who has written it.

I don't think invalidation the authenticity of the author invalidates the quote. You don't get organizational change without individual behavioural change. So from any level you start with what you want from the future and then invest your time and effort into that spot. It is a way to focus with constraint.

Seeing this years after it original posting. Yet, I am compelled to share my perspective.

Whether the context is in organizational or personal change domains, I sense the author misread the nicknamed Socrates's quote. Socrates does not suggest that we we should not leverage the informative values found in the past and present. He does not say rely solely on the future to propel you towards change. He says don't place your focus on "fighting the past." In other words, don't use all your energy and capacity defending, staying tethered to, or staying stuck in the past. Integrate what has informed you in the past and present – into your desired and aspired future self and outcomes.

Interesting...sounds like a lot of fighting between whose correct to me. I do believe in research for proper context but at the end of the day this quote "Personally Resonates" with me, the one who needs to change if I'm to bring change to others and any organization. As an ODL practitioner (Organizational Development and Leadership professional) a program that focuses on changing the person for life, then organizations. In order to bring change we have to change first, then model that change. Change isn't easy but can be very painful but beautiful...enjoy the journey!
"With Loving kindness have I drawn thee" -Yeshua

This quote is still good and relevant. You fail to see more to it. Nothing says anything about ignoring the past. it just say to focus on the furture: i.e. have a vision to look forward to so that you're not always dwelling on the past. Everything comes from something so you can never ignore the past. But every new day and new step you take will towards what you truely want in your life is an indication of change. Those who choose to stay in their own ways and not move with the vision or fail to participate in making way towards it will surely never make change. There is nothing wrong with the quote. Maybe you yourself just don't want to change or the change that has been presented to you.

I really appreciate this elaboration. But it's in the clarification of the answer being, "Both, And..."

I believe the principle being expressed is that we don't make change by RESiSTING what we don't like, but by being the water, finding the path of least resistance towards the New. That means honoring the path and the obstructions to it as all integral to the journey. Still, we are focused, on what we are moving towards...we are just taking into account what's in the way, and letting that influence HOW we move towards the new.

Thank you. My path feels emblazoned a little more with this.
