Free webinar: Inside Influence: Leading Change from the Middle

June 3, 2010

Last month, I presented live at a meeting of Organization Change Alliance in Atlanta, a presentation called “Inside Influence:  Leading Change from the Middle.”  It went so well, I thought I would provide an opportunity for internal change agents who are not in Atlanta (or who missed the original presentation) to attend!

Inside Influence: Leading Change from the Middle

Dates: Thursday, June 24, 2010
Time: 2:00 pm ET / 11:00 am PT / 7:00 pm UK
Duration: 90 minutes
Venue: Online (register for details)
Cost: Free

A common view of change is that it must start from the top of the organization. However, change is often instigated and led from pockets within an organization. In fact many roles, such as IT, engineering, project management, process improvement, strategic planning and internal HR/OD practitioners, require influencing other people in the organization to change the way they work. Since senior leaders can’t do all the work of change, managers and employees further down on the org chart are frequently tapped to take on change in addition to their day job.

In this free webinar, we will explore the role of the internal change agent, with its risks, rewards, advantages and challenges. You will learn how to leverage the role and how to best influence organizational change without authority.

Registration for this event is now closed.

Previous attendees listed the following as valuable take-aways from “Inside Influence:”

“The framework provided several ideas that I can apply to my work as a change agent.”

“Influencing change internally – [she] gave me ideas in how to continue influencing change.”

“Discussion of [the] role and influence of [an] internal change agent.”

Are key leaders in your organization frustrating you?

April 29, 2010

Are you frustrated by one or more key leaders in your organization?

For whatever reason, they are not doing what is needed to implement change? Perhaps they say they believe that change should happen, but their actions indicate otherwise.  Maybe they seem to dismiss it altogether.  Or they just do all the wrong things with the best intentions.  Either way, they feel like a giant roadblock in the path to change.  If only they would (fill in the blank), you would be able to make some real progress.

As an internal change agent with less authority, you probably feel powerless to do anything about it. Until now, your main tactics have been dropping hints and wishful thinking.  Maybe you have waited a while for them to get with the program — weeks, months, even years.

You are not alone.  In fact, not having adequate support from key leaders is the top challenge for most change agents I talk to.

It doesn’t have to be that way.  There are ways you can help leaders help you influence change, even from where you sit on the totem pole.  Join me for a 2-part online course that will help you get the leadership support you need for successful change:

New Webinar Series: The Proper Care and Feeding of Leaders

April 23, 2010

It is common knowledge that in order for your change initiative to grow beyond your own span of influence you need leadership buy-in.  The truth is you need much more than buy-in; as a change agent you need leaders in your organization to take action that supports your initiative.

The trouble is, leaders often don’t do what is needed to implement change, even if they agree it should happen.  This lack of proper leadership support is the top challenge for most change agents.

rolling boulder uphillAs a change agent, this frustration often stems from trying to implement change without having the direct authority over those going through the change.  While you may be responsible for the initiative, you have to rely on other individuals to drive the change forward in the eyes of the organization.

Effective change agents use a variety of tools to influence people on both sides of the equation:  the leaders who need to own the initiative and the rest of the organization that is going through it.

There are 10 Essential Tools that form the foundation of the INflux Change Agent Network.  They form a core of focus, personal influence, and structural influence that when combined equip a change agent to drive the change process forward.

Watch the 10 Essential Tools webinar for an overview.

Introducing the INflux Change Agent Network!

November 30, 2009

Introducing a new program for 2010 to help you influence change without authority:

influx header

Implementing organizational change is an uphill battle.

Studies show that only 30% of change initiatives meet expectations. When a change agent is involved, the success rate actually drops. The reason? Change agents have the difficult task of implementing change without actually having direct authority over the people going through the change.

rolling boulder uphillWhether you are executing strategy, implementing technology, designing process improvements, or transforming culture, your role as change agent is fraught with challenges: Convincing people to try new things. Keeping change a priority. Getting leaders to take ownership. Aligning actions towards desired outcomes. Overcoming resistance at all levels. And yet, despite (perhaps even because of) the daunting task ahead, you want to help the organization move forward.

As a member of the Influx Change Agent Network, you will expand your arsenal of influence methods and gain a community of peers to help you push the boulder uphill. Step fully into the role of change agent so you can pull all the pieces together and effectively implement change in your organization.

The show is dedicated to answering the question:  How do you influence change without authority?  Every two weeks my guests and I explore the topic for 30 minutes.

Influence Change Without Authority

July 15, 2009

I’m excited to announce that I have signed up to host my very own internet radio show on BlogTalkRadio!

The show is called The Change Agent’s Dilemma: How to Influence Change Without Authority. The first episode is coming up on Tuesday, July 21 at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, and will run for 30 minutes. The first topic will set the stage for the show:

The Roles and Relationships of Change

The success rate of organizational change projects is a dismal 30%. Did you know that for projects that use someone other than the boss as the project manager that success is even more rare? The reason: mismanaged roles and relationships. Learn the common roles within an organizational change initiative, and hear tips for managing the relationships between them.

You can tune in to listen to the live call, and you will even have the opportunity to call in to share your story or ask questions.  If not, you will be able to listen to past episodes when it’s convenient for you.

My hope is that the radio show will become a resource for people to hear ideas about how to influence organizational change from the position of internal change agent.

Free Webinar April 16: Beyond Buy-in

April 9, 2009

I’ve found through my conversations with organizational change agents that one of the most common challenges is getting individuals – usually peers or superiors – to do what needs to be done to make change happen.

Does this sound familiar?

The head of another department is not responsive to my requests.

An executive is not communicating the change properly, and it’s diminishing the message.

The CEO insists on maintaining an environment that is not conducive to the changes we should make.

Join me for a free webinar that shows you 5 steps to gain leadership support for your change initiative – through their words and actions.

Beyond Buy-in:  Raise Leadership Support for Your Change Initiative

Date:  Thursday, April 16, 2009

Time:  3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern

Space is limited. Please register to reserve your spot and receive log-in details.
